Upcoming Events

Yo, another few months have gone by, only a couple more to go. Our students have been working hard and are so good, and so respectful. These past few months have been hard, with our losses in the community. I hope to have a First Nations Parents meeting on Monday April 19th at 6 pm, we will have a guest who will bring some cedar bark and we can have a fun get together, crafting. Baskets, bracelets, or cedar roses? a delicious meal will be provided, usah, with seaweed and tlina, bannock and maybe even some Indian ice-cream. On Monday May 3, I am going to invite a First Nations author to come and share her story. She is currently working on her second book, which is coming out in May. Hopefully it will be available when she comes for the session. Dinner will also be provided. I hope that you will be able to make these sessions. Come and bring a friend, possibly someone that will be having a Grade seven student coming up to PHSS in September. For more information please call 250-949-7443 ext. 3615.

First Nations News

Grade 12 students are beginning to get excited about Grad approaching.  They are busy applying for scholarships and for admission to post secondary institutions and working at their courses.  One fund raising event, a fashion show, had been planned for April 10 but had to be postponed due to circumstances beyond the control of the organizers. The new date has not been finalized but will be in mid May, please watch for advertisements with the new date.  Grads need to be contacting Ms. Carlson with their size and $25 to rent caps and gowns for the convocation ceremony. Businesses in the community are being canvassed for donations to help support the grad activities and anyone who would like to make a donation is very welcome.  Please contact Erin Wright at (250) 949-7170 if you would like to make a donation

The month of February was spent challenging NISS to raise relief funds for Haiti.  With the help of staff, the students raised $750.00 through events such as a sponge toss and bake sales.

Events for April:

April 9 ~Yellow Day ~ Cancer Awareness

April 14 ~ Pink Day ~ Anti-bullying Day

Students’ Council

Learning doesn’t just take place in the classroom...which is why we are happy to announce that the PHSS School Garden is underway and soon classes will have the opportunity to expand their knowledge outside the school walls. While some work has already taken place, this Earth Day, April 22nd 2010, we will be officially celebrating our Ground Breaking Ceremony on site.

We’d also like to extend a special thanks to Port Hardy Bulldozing Ltd.  for donating their time, energy and resources, as well as  Orca Sand & Gravel Ltd. for their donation of new gravel that will serve as a foundation for our garden.

If anyone has questions, concerns, or wants to learn about how they can contribute to this unique project please contact Mrs. Krista Minar at:

kristadale@gmail.com or by phone (250)-949-7443 ext 3355.

So keep an eye out for this GROWING project!
